Assistive Technology

Tutorial seven was focused on assistive technology, and as stated in the dictionary is said to be "...the science or study of the practical or industrial arts." According to the Cook and Hussey reading it is mentioned that assistive technology refers to a broad range of devices, services, strategies, and practices that are conceived and applied to ameliorate the problems faced by individuals who have disabilities.

In the tutorial a piece of equipment introduced was the trackball mouse. The trackball mouse is essentially an inverted roller mouse, the ball is on top and manipulated by the fingers. It is beneficial for people with limited hand mobility and is a lot easier to use than a normal computer mouse. The user rolls the ball with the thumb, fingers, or the palm of the hand to move a cursor. There are buttons which are in easy reach of the hand that can be used to click the cursor on the computer screen. The size of a trackball mouse varies but the ones used in the tutorial were bigger than a normal computer mouse and the ball socket on the mouse takes up most of the mouse so it is easily able to be used for disabled people. The trackball mouse is a lot more expensive than other computer mouses and the cost of the ones that we used in class were around $400 to $500. The user is able to get increased functional capicity by using the trackball mouse as it easily able to be controlled and used with no pain or stress on the hand. It is able to be used easily with people that have moderate to severe motor skill difficulties and helps them to become more independent in able to use a computer themselves. The trackball mouse also gives people the opportunity to take control of tasks themselves and can be used with a wide range of people to help assist them.

The Internet and Online Communities

Tutorial six is focussing on an online community. I have chosen to look at yahoo answers.

Website address: http://www.yahoo.com

This is a website that anybody can join and ask questions they want answers for about anything. Other members of the website are able to read the questions being posted and answer them.

The website is very interactive as it is all about people communicating together to find answers to things they are unsure about. People can contribute to any questions they want and are able to post questions up themselves. People can also get awarded credit for how good their answers are and whether people find their answer useful.

People choose to contribute for many reasons, the need to find any answers they want on a particular issue or question. Also to use their knowledge to help answer other peoples questions on other topics.

There are topics on everything that are discussed on this online website. Some of them are questions such as:
"Should I get an xbox 360 elite or a playstation 3?"
"What are the easiest and hardest languages to learn?"

Ethical Issues
Ethical issues may include information about the person on their profile being exposed to other members of the website.

Benefits
Being able to find answers to any questions that could be hard to find answers for elsewhere. Having a range of opinions and advice from other people to get information from them if you are unsure about a particular topic.

Video Production Sessions

Tutorial four and five involved getting into small groups and taking a video of a particular theme. My group chose to do a video on boxy having trouble walking up the stairs. After shooting the scenes for our video us as a group were then required to upload our video onto movie maker and then edit it and choose special effects. We also had to make a youtube account to upload our video onto that and then upload the video onto our blogs.

Youtube is a service which allows anybody to sign up and to view and upload videos. They offer a wide range of videos on all different topics for people to watch and comment on. It is a visual way of learning and can be helpful for visual learners.

While preparing for our film we had to use a storyboard to plan how we were going to shoot the video. The storyboard helped my group as we were able to go back and see what we had to do for each scene and it made it easier for us to follow. It also helped us to save time as we knew exactly how we wanted to set our video out.

Services Offered by Blogger

A blog allows a person to write about their thoughts on the web. Blogs can be written about anything the blogger wants to write about, whether it being something important that happened to them or something of interest to them. Blogger enables other bloggers and people to comment on other pages and other blogs people have posted. It allows for all people to share their thoughts about a particular topic.

Blogger is a service which enables a person to create their own blogs for other people to read on the web. It also allows for the blogger to upload photos they wish to put onto their blog.

Digital Camera use and Applications

For this second tutorial we learnt about how cameras and other applications of digital technology are used in society. We also discussed how cameras have developed over the years and how they are becoming more commonly used in Occupational Therapy practice.

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". This quote is significant when looking at both postive and negative aspects of digital camera technology.

Positives: view photos straight away, able to see images easier, able to take as many photos as you like, easier to use, more storage is available on digital cameras.

Negatives: cannot view negatives, need computer to upload and edit the photos.

Photos can be stored onto computers, pendrives, and can even be plugged into the television to be viewed on there. There are simple transfers through email, facebook, and uploading to websites. Photos now days can also be sent by phone.

There are a number of ethical issues which can arise from image capturing. Such as, who will be able to access the photos (also known as greased data). There is also a need for informed consent, especially for an Occupational Therapist working in practice as the client will need to be informed of any photographs being taken in their environment.

Digital images are becoming more common in Occupational Therapy practice, they can be used in assessments with clients to review back on later. They can be used in the home environment and in other environments that the client deals with to see how the client works in those different settings.

Difference between Digital Zoom and Optical Zoom:
Digital zoom is linked to pixel count, therefore is more fuzzy looking. Optical zoom will focus in and keep the same amount of megapixel count. The more pixels the better the image.

Flickr
Flickr is a service which enables people to upload their photos and share them with other people who can view them. It is also a way for people to communicate with other people.

Megapixel
A megapixel is equal to one million pixels. The more megapixels means the better quality of images.
